Professional Bocce Court Construction & Installation
A professionally constructed bocce court can become more than a place to play. It often serves as a gathering space for family, friends, communities, and guests while enhancing the overall appeal and functionality of a property. However, creating a court that performs consistently and withstands years of use requires specialized planning beyond the visible surface alone.
The framing system, sub base preparation, drainage design, and surface materials all contribute to how a bocce court performs over time. Improper construction may result in uneven ball movement, surface shifting, moisture retention, or increased maintenance needs. In Southwest Florida, where rainfall and environmental conditions present additional challenges, proper installation becomes especially important.
Ritzman Courts constructs custom step in bocce courts using both traditional clay surfaces and synthetic turf systems designed around the preferences and goals of each client. Whether building a regulation sized court, luxury residential amenity, or recreational feature for a community property, our team delivers complete solutions focused on craftsmanship, durability, and long term enjoyment.

The Construction Standards Behind a Court That Plays Consistently
Bocce courts look simple, and that simplicity is exactly why poorly built ones are so common. People assume that any flat rectangle of clay or turf will work, and then wonder why the balls roll unevenly or why the surface erodes after one rainy season. A real bocce court has engineered base layers, proper drainage, sturdy framing, and a surface that has been graded and finished to play true.
Florida adds challenges that backyard builds rarely account for. Heavy seasonal rain washes out clay courts without proper drainage. Humidity affects how clay binds and how turf wears. UV exposure breaks down inferior surface materials over time. We design courts specifically for these conditions, so they hold up and play correctly through the long Florida playing season.
Ritzman Courts handles the entire build in-house, from site grading and base prep through framing, surfacing, and finishing. We also build supporting features like paver walkways, shade structures, lighting, and seating areas that turn a bocce court into a real outdoor amenity rather than a single-purpose patch in the yard.

The Bocce Court Construction Process
Every bocce court project begins with site assessment. We look at the space, soil, drainage, and orientation. A well-placed court has level ground, good drainage away from the playing surface, and ideally some shade or shelter from the harshest afternoon sun. From there we excavate, install the base, build out the framing, and finish with the chosen surface material.
The base layer is critical and often skipped or shortcut on amateur builds. A properly compacted aggregate base provides the structure that keeps the court level, helps drainage, and supports the surface material. We compact in lifts and check grade tolerances before any framing or surface work begins.
Clay Versus Synthetic Turf Surfaces
Clay bocce courts use a specific blend of crushed materials that pack down to a hard, smooth surface. They play traditionally, have a satisfying feel underfoot, and can be groomed to tournament conditions. They do require regular maintenance, including watering, rolling, and seasonal refreshment of the surface material.
Synthetic turf bocce courts use a short-pile turf engineered for ball roll consistency. They require almost no maintenance, drain well, and stay playable through Florida's wet season with virtually no downtime. The play feel is different from clay but completely consistent, and for many residential clients the lower maintenance is the decisive factor.
Frame Construction and Edging
The walls of a bocce court take constant impact. Cheap framing splinters, separates from the base, or rots in Florida humidity. We use materials chosen for durability and weather resistance, and we install them with proper anchoring so they stay tight against the playing surface for years. The edging where the wall meets the surface is also where amateur builds fail first, and we pay specific attention to that detail.
Drainage and Florida Weather Considerations
Even with a covered or sheltered court, drainage is essential here. We build courts with sub-surface drainage layers, perimeter drainage where needed, and grading that moves water away from the playing surface without creating runoff problems elsewhere. The goal is a court you can play on within hours of a typical Florida storm, not one that needs a day to dry out.
Discuss Your Court Build
Whether you want a regulation court for serious play or a custom residential build for entertaining, the project starts with a real conversation. We will scope the right size, surface, and supporting features for your situation.
The questions we hear before every bocce build
Both work well when built correctly. Clay plays traditionally and feels authentic, but it needs regular maintenance and proper drainage to handle Florida weather. Synthetic turf is essentially maintenance-free, drains exceptionally well, and stays playable through the wet season. For low-maintenance residential courts, turf is often the easier choice.
In most cases, yes. We work the bocce court into the broader site plan, including drainage coordination so the court does not push water toward other features. We also build complementary elements like paver walkways and shade structures as part of the same project.
Costs vary widely based on size, surface choice, site preparation, drainage, framing materials, and supporting features. A residential turf court is typically less involved than a regulation clay court with full lighting and shade structures. We provide detailed pricing after a site visit.
Yes. Even sheltered courts here benefit from engineered drainage. Without it, Florida rainfall will eventually damage the surface, the framing, or the base. Drainage is part of every court we build.
